Further information

The simple chapel on Gütschstrasse in Menziken was built in 1922 and served as a place of worship for the local Chrischona Evangelical congregation. It is a single-storey, hall-style building with a rectangular floor plan, featuring a hipped roof and a covered porch raised by a single step. The building stood vacant for a long period, until it was sold in 2000 by the owner, the Chrischona parish, to its neighbour, Susi Merz. Following a complete renovation, the building was converted into a museum. On 1 January 2001, the new owner, Susi Merz, donated the former chapel to the municipality of Menziken on the condition that the building be used as the ‘aargauSüd’ tobacco and cigar museum. The museum now houses Urs Merz’s tobacco collection and offers visitors an insight into the tobacco industry of the Wynental valley, known in the 19th and early 20th centuries as ‘Stumpenland’.
