Further information

The Anabaptist chapel in the Hackenrüti district of Wolhusen was built in 1918 on the initiative of the entrepreneur Eduard Geistlich to serve as a meeting place for the local Anabaptist congregation. The design was entrusted to the Zurich architects Heinrich Müller and Johann-Albert Freytag, who were also responsible for the design of the villa and the industrial site of the Geistlich company. Following the death of Eduard Geistlich in 1954, part of his estate was set aside for the upkeep of the Anabaptist community’s meeting hall, which belonged to the Eduard Geistlich Foundation. The chapel stood empty for a long time, until the building was taken over in 2011 by the Chrischona association, then sold a year later to Mr and Mrs Schär, who had moved into the flat on the upper floor. In 2013, the ‘Kapello’ restaurant and events venue opened its doors in the former place of worship. A few church pews in the restaurant and in the garden serve as a reminder of the building’s former function as a place of worship.
