Further information

The Heiligkreuz parish centre in Bern-Tiefenau, built in 1969 to a design by Walter M. Förderer, was sold at the end of January 2018 by the Roman Catholic parish of the Roman Catholic Church of Bern and the surrounding area to the Romanian Orthodox parish of St Georgen for 900,000 francs. This decision had been taken by the Church’s Grand Council on 22 November 2017. For several years now, parish life in this region has been increasingly centred on Bremgarten. The ‘Johanneszentrum’, which has been extended on the same site, was re-inaugurated in mid-January 2018. The farewell service at the Heiligkreuz Church took place on 21 January 2018. The church was deconsecrated. This means that the Catholic liturgical objects were removed. For the Croatian community, for whom the church had also served as a meeting place for 32 years, the deconsecration was a time of mourning. The community is moving its spiritual centre to the Protestant Church of Bethlehem. It will organise its community events at the centre of the neighbouring parish of Saint-Maurice. Shortly before the deconsecration, the parish and the parish community of Sainte-Croix published an art guide dedicated to the the church as part of the ‘Schweizer Kunstführer’ collection.
