Further information

The St Alban monastery complex was founded in 1083 by Burkhard von Fenis, one of Basel’s most important bishops of the Middle Ages. However, only a few remnants of the original 11th-century building remain. The medieval monastery church underwent extensive renovation in the 13th century. This renovation continues to define the church’s appearance to this day. St Alban’s Church belongs to the Basel Cathedral Parish, which has leased it on a permanent basis to the Metropolis of Switzerland within the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople since 1971. The first tenant was the Greek Orthodox parish of north-western Switzerland; from 1981 to 2003, it shared the church with the Serbian Orthodox parish in Basel, and since 2004 the latter has been the sole tenant. Thanks to the long-term tenancy agreement, the ERK granted the congregation permission to install an iconostasis in the front part of the church in accordance with its needs. The church underwent extensive renovation from 2011 to 2014.
